Thank you to everyone who came out for the Toughest 10K in Houston. The race was organized by Clear Lake Fitness Club (CLFC) and the Bay Area Running Club (BARC). All proceeds benefit the American Red Cross and the Houston Food Bank.
The run was wonderful and very well organized given the short amount of time to put it all together. A big thanks to the race director, Robby Sabban, and to all the wonderful volunteers who gave up a chance to sleep in on Sunday and help with the race. Hope to see everyone next year!
Brenda and well-endowed Ed greeting runners at the water station
Welcome to all the new club members and returning members! It is going to be an exciting new season that will culminate with the 2009 Houston Marathon and Half-Marathon. Many of our new members will be doing their first half-marathon and marathon! Others in our Fitness Group are pursuing shorter distances, 5K or 10K. We look forward to helping everyone meet their goals.
Many of our members will also be running/walking in the Inaugural Rock 'n Roll San Antonio Marathon and Half-Marathon (November 16). We plan to have a pasta party the night before (more detail later). If you are not on the mailing list for this training group, please email the coaches. Dave Schaider will be going to California for his annual running of the San Francisco Marathon (August 3). You may have seen him running back and forth on the Kemah Bridge in preparation for the hills in San Francisco. The Mount Desert Island Marathon (Bar Harbor, Maine Oct 19) will be the get-away marathon for Dave Stockton and others. Terry Frank, our Managing Director, finally got into the NY Marathon this year! She'll be running it in Nov 2 and follow it up with the San Antonio Marathon. The ultra-marathoners in the club will be taking on the 48 hours Ultracentric Race (McKinney, TX Nov 14-16), Sunmart 50 miles (Dec 6), Bandera 100K (Jan 10), and Rocky Raccoon 100 miles (Feb 7). The last marathons of the season for many will be the Austin Marathon (Feb 15) and our club sponsored sixth annual Seabrook Lucky Trail Marathon Weekend (March 14-15).

I registered for the 48 Hour ULTRACENTRIC ( www.ultracentric.net ) Race in the summer, which would be the longest planned race that I have attempted, thus far. The race began on Friday, November 14, 2008 at 9:00AM. The race started out with temperatures in the 70's and a slight wind. In the early afternoon, the wind picked up out of the North with 20 to 30 mile per hour winds. Overnight the temperature dropped to 44 degrees but the wind never slacked off. Sunrise was beautiful and the winds finally slowed down to 10 miles per hour which was tolerable.
On January 18, 2009 17,000 people will be running in the Houston Marathon and Half Marathon. Is this the year you take the challenge? The Clear Lake Fitness Club can be your first step to joining "the Marathon Club." Nobody can do it without training!
Runners and walkers of all paces are welcomed and encouraged to join us for our 8th season. We have experienced coaches and mentors for ALL pace groups - from Boston qualifiers to recreational walkers (20+ min. per mile). We are very walker-friendly! In addition to our Marathon and Half-Marathon training groups, we have a Fitness Group doing shorter distances (10K and less).
We also feature social activities for club members! Many members meet weekly to socialize after the weekly Saturday long run/walk at a local breakfast spot for food and/or beverages. Everyone is welcome. If your schedule permits this is a great way to meet other members and have a lot of fun. Usually, monthy socials are planned for members and their families!
